Dans le cadre du cycle Jeudi Sciences, conférence tous publics présentée par Nathalie Séjalon-Delmas, enseignant-chercheur au LRSV et directrice du Service commun d'études et de conservation des collections patrimoniales (SCECCP) de l’Université Toulouse III-Paul Sabatier.

« Connaissez-vous le jardin botanique Henri Gaussen ?

Adossé au Museum, ce jardin botanique de l'université Toulouse III-Paul Sabatier présente des collections végétales illustrant les thématiques ethnobotaniques et les adaptations à l'environnement. Dans les serres vivent des plantes carnivores, des plantes de milieux arides, mais aussi des plantes tropicales. Parmi celles-ci, certaines se sont adaptées à un environnement où les insectes ravageurs pullulent. Pour se défendre, elles ont établi une cohabitation avec des fourmis !

Par différents moyens, ces plantes offrent le gîte aux colonies de fourmis qui, en échange, patrouillent et piègent les insectes ravageurs dont elles vont se nourrir. Elles fournissent même à la plante quelques molécules nutritives issues de la digestion de leurs proies. Certaines d'entre elles poussent l'interaction avec la plante encore plus loin. Par exemple, la fourmi Allomerus utilise les poils de la tige qu'elle tricote avec des filaments de champignons pour façonner des galeries où se cacher pour mieux piéger ses proies.

C'est cette histoire, insoupçonnable à la vue des plantes, que je me propose de vous raconter. »
